When my wife Lindsay made a poster to sell at our book events, we weren’t sure how well it would do. After all, we’re asking people to buy the book. Would they want a poster too? Do people who care about climate change and solar power even want posters?
As it turns out, the wall art seemed to touch a chord. At book talks and author readings, sometimes we sell more posters than books. Is that because people who come have already bought the book? I’d like to think so. Or maybe they just really like Lindsay’s bold graphic design.
Since the poster has been so popular, we wanted to make it available to a wider audience. So, Lindsay’s put it up on Etsy. You can buy it at this link.
Of course our poster is inspired by bold images from the colonial and revolutionary periods, like Ben Franklin’s famous “Join or Die” image from the French and Indian War.

Our poster also evokes the ongoing history of political broadsides, from the abolition movement and the Civil War to the women’s suffrage movement, the world wars and the 1960s.
As our product description puts it,
Agitating for American rights begins on the streets, and in places where people gather. Nothing is more important to that than street art — broadsides aimed at the establishment when it will not hear the voice of its people.
Broadsides to make visible a thought.
Broadsides to inspire reaction | reflection | engagement.
Broadsides to build a movement of thought.
