Maybe you think of Bill Nye, known on TV as the Science Guy, as a genial explainer of how things work for kids and the adults who know them.
But for years Nye has also been speaking out on climate science, trying to get his viewers to take the climate crisis seriously and especially not to get distracted by science deniers.
Now, Nye is taking an edgier approach. Whether he’s personally angry about America’s lack of progress on climate solutions or not — I’ll bet he is pretty annoyed — he’s now decided to act angry on TV.
And for a late-night audience, it really works. This is not Bill Nye for kids — it’s Bill Nye with all the stops pulled out, f-bombs and all. Aside from being hilarious, it’s also effective.
Nye is right to get angry.
Anyone who cares about the climate crisis should be angry too. It’s an emergency that threatens the future of human civilization and the future of America. And yet, our government continues to fiddle while Rome burns.
Watch Nye’s appearance on John Oliver’s show, have a few laughs, get worked up about our lack of progress on climate solutions, and then go out into America and get your friends and family worked up too.
